Vikings Baseball is off to a great start after three games with a 1-2 record. Things could be better but we won't complain. We lost our opening game on April 2, 2003 against Bristol-Plymouth 2-0. Dave Salvucci pitched a great game but got no run support. Marc Sheppard did swing a good bat but was unable to bring any runs across the plate.
The second game was even better. Blue Hills needed to suicide squeeze in the top of the seventh to beat the Vikings in their second outing. The Vikings played much better offensively and had a couple of chances to win the game. Dan FitzGerald pitched well enough to win but we couldn't get the big hit when we needed it. Blue Hills eventually won 9-5 as the Vikings could not muster a second rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Game number three was a different story as the Vikings opened their league schedule with a 17-3 pounding of the the Norfolk Aggie Rams. Once again Dave Salvucci pitched masterfully as he struck out 13 and gave up three hits and three runs in the 3rd inning. Every other inning was a 1-2-3 inning. The offense really exploded with Dan Fitz leading the way with a Grand Slam home run and 6 rbi's. Dave Wing, Corey Nicotera, Mike Caizzi and Marc Sheppard all had multiple hit days. Catching in his first varsity game was Freshman Kyle Cascarano, who did a great job handling Dave's fine performance. The team travels to Harwich tomorrow Wednesday, April 16, for a key league game against Cape Tech. The Vikings will be starting Greg Reis and Kyle C will still be behind the plate.
Game four was a tough one. It seems the bus ride did us in because we gave up 5 runs on 5 consecutive hits in the first inning then we held Cape Tech scoreless and hitless for the remainder of the game. Greg Reis took the loss but pitched very well after the first. We once again did not hit the ball as a team but played great team defense. our record dropped to 1-3 and we get ready to head for Chatham on Thursday, April 17.
Game 5 was by far our worst outing this year. The bitter cold really did us in as this was the first time we played like we did not want to be there. Corey Nicotera was missing and Dan Fitz didn't make it out of the first inning pitching. We did get fine pitching by Jesse Delgado, Bob Frederickson and Ray Hughes in relief of Dan. Our bats woke up for a couple of innings but certainly not enough. We lost to Chatham 12-4 making our record 1-4 going into April vacation.
Game 6 was the vacation game vs Cohasset. This rivalry has been pretty one-sided since it started but this year we at least gave them a run for their money. It was also our only scheduled wooden bat game of the year. Dave Salvucci pitched and did a good job but Cohasset proved to be too much for the Vikings as they went on to win the game after a good start by our team. Our record dropped to 1-5, but once again we were on track playing good baseball.
